The Miami Dolphins may have had a different look and maybe even retained Adam Gase if he had his way ahead of the 2018 season.

UPDATE: Dave Hyde of the Sun-Sentinel, someone I trust more than any other beat writer of the Dolphins has said that there was never a blockbuster trade in the works between the Dolphins and Lions. You can read his piece on the subject here.

According to a report by Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Miami Dolphins through Adam Gase tried for what he terms a “blockbuster deal” that would have brough the long-time Detroit Lion to Miami.

Salguero says that Gase personally called his close friend Matt Patricia to strike a deal but ultimately that deal fell through as Patricia, in his first year as the team’s head coach, wasn’t ready to move on from him just yet.

The Herald writer also said that Miami may have offered their 2018 first round pick, used on Minkah Fitzpatrick, and potentially more for the 31-year-old quarterback.

To say the least things would have been quite different in Miami and probably not in a good way. The trade would have been a desperation move by Gase to make his team a playoff contender. Last year Stafford did not have a very good season.

There were some light rumors floating around that the Dolphins may have had interest in the QB and there was national speculation that Miami could try to land him so this does seem to go along with the timeframe last off-season.

It also says a lot about what Gase thought of Ryan Tannehill. Was it concern over his injury or was it concern that he couldn’t reach that ceiling Gase said Tannehill had yet to achieve? Either way, it was probably a good thing that the Dolphins didn’t get that move and it could prove fortuitous for the Dolphins.

Had the trade happened, the Dolphins may have finished a couple of games better and Gase might have been retained. Given the problems on defense it is unlikely that had the Dolphins made the post-season they would have done much damage or gone deep into the playoffs.

With Gase now gone the Dolphins having turned to Brian Flores, they are rebuilding the roster and looking for a fresh new quarterback in the draft. It is still uncertain if that QB will come this year or next.
