Miami Dolphins corner back situation remains a concern after free agency
By Brian Miller
With free agency now long in the rearview mirror, a look at the Miami Dolphins cornerback situation makes you believe more work needs to be done.
The Miami Dolphins added Eric Rowe in free agency. A low-priced veteran that comes from the Patriots system. While his addition should help with any transitions, he is far from a player that is going to elevate the secondary.
For the Dolphins the secondary remains a problem. Xavien Howard is the best of the unit and there are reports that his agent and the Dolphins are making progress on a new contract extension. On the other side is a massive question mark that remains unanswered.
Cordrea Tankersley still has time to develop but there are questions that surround that development. He needs to take a big step this year and a new coaching staff could be what is needed.
Bobby McCain remains the Dolphins best option for the nickel and slot corner role. He struggled on the boundary but there is no question he is good in the slot. Under Flores and Patrick Graham, McCain should be used more consistently with the schemes that they will be installing. He could see more production the next two seasons.
Walt Aikens continues to impress on special teams but really hasn’t done much as a corner. How he is used by Graham will be interesting to watch.

Miami opened their off-season program with Cornell Armstrong, Jalen Davis, Dee Delaney, Torry McTyer, Chris Lammons and Jomal Wiltz all on the corner unit. Four of those players have one year experience and three others have three or less.
All development type players, the Dolphins could play out the 2019 season and see if anyone emerges to play on the boundary or they could wait until 2020 to address the position when they are in a better draft situation.
For now the position remains one in transition like the rest of the team. At some point Miami will have to add a corner through the draft but for now, they could stay put and let things play out.
