Fans of the big lumbering types of players should be happy if these changes hold true on both sides of the ball for the Miami Dolphins.

Brian Flores and his Miami Dolphins coaching staff are likely to bring with them similare player types from their days with the Patriots.

On offense it should be the use of a fullback to help open holes between the tackles and taking on the best linebackers in the league. The Patriots have employed 255lb 6-3 James Develin who in five full seasons has amassed only 222 rushing yards. He is an unsung hero that helps make things easier on others like rookie RB Sony Michel who rushed for 931 yards with 6 TD’s, also James White rushed for 425 yards with 5 TD’s he is also a weapon in the passing game with 751 yards and 7 TD’s.

A few other interesting stats for the use of the FB Develin is that in the 2018 season he only had 6 rushing attempts for 8 yards himself yet had 4 rushing TD’s that had to have been goal line ones for the short yardage but there was still an eliminate of surprise from having blocked so much for the other backs. There is a stat that I can’t find now with Google not being my friend. The stat is that the Patriots had the most rushing TD’s on the 2018 season with a FB blocking the way.

Will this type of play be tried to be replicated here? I’m guessing that it will. New head coach Brian Flores was noncommittal when speaking about running backs and using one as a workhorse. If he should install the Patriots way here it would be rotating backs. The Pats would often use four in this fashion but have two main backs. One geared more for running in Michel and one more for passing in White.

If this comes to be we still might question if Kenyan Drake can handle the full load but it will be closer to that mark.

On defense it will be a nose tackle type. “Type” because it should be a defense that will switch in and out from a 4-3 to a 3-4. It should also use more backs and safeties but right now the big guys are in the spotlight.

Just like the FB as described above is an unsung hero making things easier for the ones gaining glory so will these NT types. They probably wont be getting many tackles for loses or rushing into the backfield for attempted sacks. They will be more suited to be blocking running lanes with their presence by filling holes.

Look for the Miami Dolphins to pick up some big undrafted DT’s like the Pats did last off-season. Players in the 310 to 320 pound range that can be versatile enough to play in scheme changes while still stopping the run.
