The Miami Dolphins have reportedly shown interest in trading for Josh Rosen and if that is true, then the “tank” talk is all wrong.

When the 2018 season ended the speculation was that the Miami Dolphins would draft a quarterback early in 2019’s draft. Then Ryan Tannehill was traded and that speculation appeared to be correct. If we back up just a bit however, it was 2020 that was supposed to provide the QB answer.

After Adam Gase was fired, there was a lot of talk from Chris Grier and even Stephen Ross that the team would rebuild. When Brian Flores was introduced as the head coach there was talk that Miami would build the team from the trenches. That made a lot of sense and sent one Dolphins beat writer into a “Tank for Tua” campaign that still has not let up. Now with talk of a potential trade for Josh Rosen, one has to wonder why exactly and what that means for the Dolphins rebuild.

For starters, it could all be a smokescreen or a team simply doing their due diligence to see if a player is available and at what price. Rosen however would not mean the Dolphins are not drafting a QB in 2020. It would mean they wouldn’t be drafting one in 2019. But Rosen could be that annual smokescreen and if the reports are accurate about the Dolphins interest in a QB, it could mean that Miami is either sending up more smoke signals to the NFL or legitimately want a QB in round one.

The smokescreen angle would put Miami in a position to make other teams believe that they have interest in trading for Rosen which means they have no interest in drafting one. That could force a team like the Redskins who reportedly have interest in Rosen to step up and trade for him. This would take one more team out of the running for a first round QB if that is the Dolphins target.

At this point everything can be taken with a grain of salt because in reality, no one knows what the Dolphins intentions are with Rosen or any other QB in this years class but if they truly are looking at Rosen then they are doing so for the value of what that trade might be for rather than spending a first round pick on a QB.

It could also make other teams believe that the Dolphins real target is indeed a QB in this years draft rather than in 2020. That “smokescreen” could make other teams who want a QB draft one ahead of Miami thus allowing a top defensive player to fall to Miami at 13.

The mirrors are out along with the smoke and we only need to wait another two days to know their real intentions. It should get interesting.
