When the Miami Dolphins were rumored to be interested in Josh Rosen, many fans were extremely turned off by the prospect but it made sense.

As day two of the NFL Draft began to unfold, the hottest topic being discussed was the Miami Dolphins trading for Cardinal QB Josh Rosen. It was a good rumor that ruined day two of the draft. The thing is Chris Grier made it work and in the process, made the trade look so much better than it could have been.

When the Dolphins were on the clock at 48 the growing contention was that the pick would swing to the Cardinals and Josh Rosen would be on a flight to Miami but instead, Grier traded down to 62 and in doing so swapped their 4th round pick for the Saints 6th round pick this year and the Saints 2nd round pick in 2020. Again adding to the number of picks Miami has already in next years draft.

Then the waiting game began once again. Miami stayed quiet but when they were on the clock things began to heat up and with 30 seconds left on the draft clock, the trade for Rosen was announced. Miami had a new quarterback that they desperately needed and the Cardinals walked away with more than a 3rd round pick.

Arizona had maintained they wanted a first round pick for the QB after trading up in 2018 to the 11th spot to draft him. It was widely speculated last year that the Dolphins would have drafted Rosen at 13 but they didn’t want to trade up for him.

The downside to day two’s trade is that the Dolphins also sent a 5th round draft pick to the Cardinals in 2020. That isn’t a huge deal as Miami will likely find a way to get that pick back between now and then and they are still expected to have around 13 picks in that draft.

What the trade for Rosen does for Miami however is give them options. Rosen could start day one but will have to compete with Ryan Fitzpatrick. Miami will have the entire off-season to evaluate him and the entire season to do the same. If they see what they want with Rosen, the Dolphins can trade down in 2020 and gather more picks as teams jockey for the top quarterbacks. If they fail with Rosen, they will be in position to draft one.

If Rosen still isn’t the guy in 2021, there is always Trevor Lawrence. The gut of it all is simple. The Dolphins needed to get a quarterback. Ideally it would have come a year from now but they have one nonetheless.
