Several ways to look at Josh Rosen trade that makes sense
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins traded for Josh Rosen on Friday night and some fans are loving the picks and other fans are having trouble with it.
On social media yesterday one Miami Dolphins fan declared that he was now a Carolina Panther fan. Yes the draft can make NFL fans become utterly stupid but it does showcase the degree of which fans can hate a draft pick or a trade.
It is easy to look at the trade and get upset. Afterall we have been under the impression that 2020 would provide that top QB. Maybe it still will or maybe Rosen will prove to be a legit franchise QB. Regardless of what happens down the road, for now, the trade isn’t that bad if you look at it in the right way.
Miami turned their 48th overall pick into a 2020 2nd round pick and a swap of 4th and 6th rounders. If that trade alone ended there fans would be generally thrilled. Miami covets 2020 draft picks and positioning themselves to have leverage in that draft.
Miami spent a 2nd round pick on a player that was drafted one year earlier at 11 overall. Rosen has not been ruined by the NFL even though he had a one year head coach in Arizona,
Now consider this for a moment. Rewind to 2018. If the Dolphins had traded up for Rosen, many fans would have been thrilled. He was one of the targets that many believed the Dolphins should have drafted. Had Miami done that, they would have made a similar trade that the Cardinals did.
Arizona moved from the 15th spot to the 10th spot with the Raiders. It cost them a 3rd and 5th round pick to make that move. Had the Dolphins traded up it would have been similar. Maybe a 3rd in 2018 and a 5th in 2019. Still fans would have applauded that move as they now had their QB.
Now let us look at this a different way. Lets say that the Dolphins stayed at 13 but they called the Raiders and made a trade that would send a 2019 2nd round draft pick and a 2020 5th round pick for the 10th overall pick in the draft. It would be considered highway robbery and the Dolphins would be heralded as one of the best trading teams in history.

This is exactly what happened. The Dolphins basically drafted Minkah Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen for a late 2019 2nd round draft pick and a 2020 5th round pick.
Still not convinced? O.k. you can look at it this way then. Miami traded a 5th round pick in 2020 for Josh Rosen and a swap of 4th and 6th round picks. The 2nd round pick was a push since they gained that pick back next year.
The value for Josh Rosen in this trade is very good for Miami. No matter how you look at this trade it makes sense and the Dolphins got the better end of the deal. Not to mention the fact that Arizona has already paid all of the guaranteed portions of Rosen’s contract.
