Did the Miami Dolphins do enough to fill their needs?

The Miami Dolphins made some moves and set themselves up for next year but did they do enough to start filling the holes they have?

This is a rebuild year for the Miami Dolphins. So is 2020 when there will likely be some 10 draft picks walking through the door of Davie to be introduced. In reality, 2021 is part of that rebuild as well. Consider it the Dolphins, “Endgame” if you will.

The plan is simple but not really simple at all. Fill some needs this year but don’t spend a lot. Get your franchise QB in 2020 if the guy you traded for this year isn’t worth that 2nd round pick. Bulk up your roster with talent that is young and has specific talents. Finish it all off and make is shiny in 2021. In 2022, blow the crap out of the AFC East.

Like I said, simple.

That brings us back to last weekends draft. Did the Dolphins do enough to fill those holes? Of course not but they were not trying to fill every hole they have on the roster. They wanted to fill some, a few if possible. Add depth to areas that are depleted and wait out the week until they can add veterans in free agency.

Why this week? Well the NFL’s calculations for compensatory picks stops on Thursday. Any players the Dolphins sign after Thursday don’t count against that calculation. Yes, the Dolphins are waiting as are a bunch of other teams.

Miami didn’t fill all their needs and they won’t from the FA pool either. They added some guys though who could make a difference.

Christian Wilkins in round one has the upside and potential to be a great defensive tackle. He fills a big need on the Dolphins front and while he may not be an edge rusher, he can get to a quarterback and stop the run. He fills a big need for the Dolphins just not the biggest hole.

Josh Rosen wasn’t supposed to be the Dolphins prospective quarterback of the future but after trading down to pick 62 in round two, the Dolphins felt that the value for Rosen was such that they couldn’t pass on the potential. Let’s remember the Dolphins did their research on Rosen in 2018 and so did the Patriots. That is important because two of the guys that were in that Patriot research room are with the Dolphins. One of them is new OC Chad O’Shea.

Michael Dieter could be the Dolphins Richie Incognito moving forward. He is a tough physical player that can play both guard and center positions. Does he fill a need? Absolutely and many believed that Miami should have drafted a guard much higher than they actually did.

These are three pieces to a puzzle that Miami is putting together. There are no guarantees but the top three guys that came out of this draft could have huge impacts on this rebuild. The Dolphins went out and got players that fit their system. Next year I anticipate them drafting guys that will run that system.
