Miami Dolphins history with 2nd round picks since 2000
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins are notably bad at drafting in the 2nd round. This year they sent a 2nd round pick to Arizona for Josh Rosen.
It is way too early to know if the Miami Dolphins trade for Josh Rosen will be a good choice or a bad one but there have been plenty of bad second-round draft picks since 2000.
2003 – Eddie Moore
The Miami Dolphins did not need a linebacker when Dave Wannstedt drafted Moore in the 2nd round. They needed wide-receiver help and Wannstedt passed on Anquan Boldin to take Moore. Boldin went on to have an HoF type career while Moore lasted two seasons in Miami and the NFL. He started only 3 games of the 18 he was active for. During those two seasons, he posted a combined 35 tackles.
2007 – John Beck
There is still the memory of John Beck on the draft day camera getting the call from Cam Cameron that he was their pick in the 2nd round. Beck amounted to nothing more than a camp body and back-up for his short time with the Dolphins. Beck lasted one season with the Dolphins and one more with the Redskins before leaving the league for good. He was 0-4 as a starter with the Dolphins during their 1-15 season and completed only 56% of his passes on 239 attempts.
2009 – Pat White
Pat White was a Bill Parcells monumental draft mistake. He lasted one season in Miami and that one season would be only one in the NFL. White was active for 13 games but started none in his lone season. He completed no passes but rushed for 81 yards as the Dolphins tried to use his talent in the Wild Cat formation. White was knocked out of a game against the Steelers which would leave him lifeless on the sideline. It was the last time he played a game.
2011 – Daniel Thomas

- Miami Dolphins don’t need CB help but these 5 could be available at 51

- Miami Dolphins have a starting point with Wilkins after Simmons deal
- The Miami Dolphins should not take a running back in the draft
Daniel Thomas wasn’t just a bust in Miami he cost the team draft picks as Jeff Ireland traded back into round two to draft him. The Kansas star running back lasted four seasons in Miami and was out of the NFL entirely. He finished his NFL career with 1,480 yards and 10 touchdowns. Sometimes flashing skill but mostly unable to create yards.
2012 – Jonathan Martin
Martin should have been the lockdown right tackle but instead, he mentally gave up on his team and himself. There isn’t a lot to say about Martin that hasn’t already been said but he reportedly continues to seek help for his mental problems. Martin’s blowup over what became known as “bully-gate” would cost two players, Richie Incognito and eventually John Jerry their jobs as well as the Dolphins long-time trainer and their offensive line coach.
2013 – Jamar Taylor
After three seasons with the Dolphins, Taylor was part of a draft-day trade with the Cleveland Browns where he would spend two seasons. In 2018 he split time with the Cardinals and the Broncos. He recently signed a free agent contract with the Seahawks extending his NFL career another season.
While with Miami, Taylor stared only nine games of the 33 games he appeared in spending much of his time inactive. He posted no interceptions and only four passes defensed in his Dolphins career.
2015 – Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips should have been a great draft pick but his inconsistency on the field and lack of consistent effort dogged him from the start. Phillips showed signs of being great and a player to build around but would turn around, sometimes on the next play, and dog it with zero effort. It was a common description of him coming out of college. He didn’t let the naysayers down.
Phillips’ continued lack of progress eventually led to arguments with the coaching staff and that led to him being surprisingly cut early in the 2018 season. He moved on to the Bills and has played about the same with inconsistent effort all the while talking loudly on social media about how good he is going to be.
