Miami Dolphins short list of successful 2nd round picks since 2000
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins have been plagued by bad decisions in the 2nd round but there have been some players that stood out as some of the best.
The Miami Dolphins have made bad decisions with their second round picks over the years but that doesn’t mean they haven’t made good decisions. They just tend to get outweighed.
2001 – Chris Chambers
Chambers spent six and one-half seasons with Miami being traded to the Chargers before the trade deadline in 2007. He made one Pro Bowl while with Miami. In seven seasons, Chambers posted 5,688 yards on 405 catches with 43 touchdowns. His career after Miami lasted another three seasons but he bounced from the Chargers to the Chiefs where he finished his NFL career in 2010.
2009 – Sean Smith
For all of Smith’s off-field issues, they did not rear their head in Miami. Smith spent four seasons in Miami and developed into a top corner in the league. He signed a free agent contract with the Chiefs in 2013 after the Dolphins decided they didn’t want to match the asking price he was seeking. In his time with Miami, he had five interceptions and 39 passes defended with a touchdown. After leaving Miami the wheels started to fall off and he eventually landed in jail.
2010 – Koa Misi
Misi could have been great but he was still good most of the time. His biggest problems came late in his career when a neck injury forced his retirement. When healthy, Misi was solid in the passing game and did well setting the edge but he wasn’t much of a pass rusher from the outside. He spent his entire NFL career with the Dolphins retiring in 2017. He played only three games in 2016 and while he was on the roster early in 2017, he retired due to the neck injury.
2014 – Jarvis Landry

Landry was one of the best 2nd round draft picks that the Dolphins ever made but his time with Miami would be short after he and then head coach Adam Gase could not see eye to eye with his role on the offense. In his four seasons with the Dolphins, Landry made three Pro Bowls. He broke the single-season catch record for the Dolphins in 2017 with 112 receptions. Over the course of those four seasons, Landry caught over 100 passes in two of those seasons. Despite his receptions, however, Landry rarely found the end-zone catching 22 touchdowns in that span but most came outside of the red-zone.
2016 – Xavien Howard
There isn’t much to say about the Dolphins shut down corner who just recently became the highest paid corner in NFL history. The Dolphins locked Howard up for the next five seasons on a deal that could pay as high as $76 million with $46 guaranteed. He has become one of the most reliable members of the secondary and continues to get better.
