The Miami Dolphins are not going to finish the 2019 season holding the top pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and they need to have a plan for that.

When the Miami Dolphins are on the clock for the first time in the 2020 NFL Draft, they won’t be following the commissioner’s opening statement. More than likely, the Dolphins will pick from 2-5 instead.

If you have been watching the Dolphins lately you will realize that they are not phoning in the season for Tua Tagoavailoa. A game winning two point conversion attempt, a fake field goal on 4th and one, no, sorry, Brian Flores wants wins.

That is the sad truth to all of the Tagovailoaites out there. The question that all of the “Tank for Tua” bus riders needs to ask is whether or not the Dolphins will sell their draft capital to move up and take him. While I’m pretty certain that many believe they should and others believe they will, I’m not so sure that is the game plan for Chris Grier and I don’t believe it should be.

While I like Tagovailoa, I’m not sold on him being the only great quarterback that could come of out of this draft class and because of that, I tend to look at other QB’s when I start thinking about the draft itself.

Jake Fromm has a lot of upside and is a leader and a winner. Joe Burrow is climbing a lot of ladders with his play and he has played some good teams. The Alabama game will be a fun one to watch. While Justin Herbert has fallen a bit this year, he has an NFL caliber arm.

The point is, and many will disagree because they only see Tagovailoa as the answer, Miami has other options at quarterback that could become great NFL quarterbacks in the Dolphins system. Whether it is Fromm, Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Jordan Love, or Herbert, the Dolphins don’t need to throw a bunch of picks at a team to get the top spot. They may find success staying put.

If we rewind to 2012 there were a lot of fans calling for Miami to toss their picks at Indianapolis to draft Luck. They also wanted Miami to throw picks at Washington to draft Robert Griffin, III. Oddly, it is Ryan Tannehill who is still starting in the NFL

I’m all in on Tua Tagovailoa if Miami holds the first overall pick but it cost Miami a lot to gain more first round draft capital. Losing Laremy Tunsil especially hurts. I’m just not sold on Tags if the Dolphins have to ship picks to get him. I see he has more potential than some of the other QB’s but I don’t see that divide to be so large that Miami can’t draft someone else and keep their picks.

Miami has started playing better football and like it or not, a win is coming. Miami has two games against the Jets and face the Steelers, Giants, and the winless Bengals. There is a good chance Miami wins two or three of these and that will definitely move them out of that top spot.
