The Miami Dolphins are a young football team that has a lot of undrafted players, rookies, and not a lot of veteran talent. They also don’t have a lot of millionaires.

Earlier today we were discussing the potential extension for defensive back Eric Rowe, and when we took a look at the 2019 salary distribution it was surprising just how many players are not making at least a million dollars per season.

To be fair, to the Dolphins, we are talking about active players on the roster. Miami has four more players making millions on the injured reserve. Reshad Jones is the highest-paid player on the team with a $17 million cap hit followed by Xavien Howard with a $10 million hit. Bobby McCain is just over $6million and Aqib Talib who has never played a single down for Miami is at $4 million.

Talib was acquired from the Rams in a trade at the league deadline, the Dolphins assumed his salary for this year despite him being on IR. They received a draft pick from the Rams to take him and the salary.

Heading back to the current active roster, 18 players are currently making more than $1 million this year. It isn’t surprising given the fact that Miami gutted their roster as they work to rebuild it. It also should be pointed out that a big portion of the roster is made up of young players who were undrafted. Still, there are some surprises.

More from Phin Phanatic

Ken Crawley brings up the 18th spot with $1.07 million. He has been injured and inactive. Taco Charlton has been a good addition to the Dolphins defense after being acquired off waivers. He comes in at $1.2. Josh Rosen, Raekwon McMillan, Mike Gesicki, and Christian Wilkins are all between $1.2 and $2.7 (Wilkins) and all of them are still on portions of their rookie contract.

Jakeem Grant was extended this year and falls in the mid-$1 million range. His contract in 2020 jumps to $4.3 million.

The over $2 million club, in addition to Wilkins, includes offensive lineman, Chris Reed, Jesse Davis, Evan Boehm, and Daniel Kilgore. Charles Harris is also in this club as well.

Two players make $3 million. Allen Hurns at $3.7, Hurns just got extended and his 2020 cap hit is only $2.9, Eric Rowe is also in the three mill range. DeVante Parker is just under $5 million while Ryan Fitzpatrick is at $5.5 and Albert Wilson is the highest-paid active player currently at $8.3.

Looking at 2020, only 18 players currently have a contract that pays over $1 million in 2020 although the Dolphins will be active in free agency and that number will definitely go up, it should also be noted that of those 18, six may not be back for next year.
