Opinion: The best option for the Miami Dolphins at 3 is a trade

The Miami Dolphins hold the third overall pick but they need to be smart and realize that trading that pick is the best option for their franchise.

The Dolphins can say whatever they want about the state of their roster. They can say they like it, that they are confident in their building of it, but there is no single player worth what the Dolphins would likely get for the 3rd overall pick.

First and foremost, the Dolphins are still rebuilding. They are getting better but they have more to do. This is not a team that is going to go to the Super Bowl next year and no player taken in the draft at three overall is going to change that.  Not Kyle Pitts, not Penei Sewell, not a top receiver. They are going to help make this team better a year from now but the Dolphins, in my opinion, need to focus on the bigger picture and if a trade offer is made that is realistic, Miami needs to take it.

Consider this, the Dolphins’ options to trade may come down to a drop to four through 11 and that would be my limit. I would not drop any further than that. If we look at how the top of the draft could play out, the Dolphins are in great shape if they stay 11 or below.

We know that Trevor Lawrence is going to go number one overall. We don’t know what the Jets are planning to do. We can be almost certain that the next players that come off the board will be these 10. Penei Sewell, Jaylen Waddle, Ja’Marr Chase, Kyle Pitts, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Rashawn Slater, DeVonta Smith, Micah Parsons, and probably Patrick Surtain, II. The Dolphins would improve with any of those selections so why take one at three when you can drop down and still get an impact player. The truth is, very little actually separates these guys from each other.

The addition of more draft picks gives the Dolphins more opportunity to hit on a player and fill a need. A trade scenario that involves a possible number one draft pick in 2022, gives the Dolphins more ammunition and capital to add more players. Chances are, trade with any of the top 10 teams this year will likely net another top 10 draft pick next year. The Dolphins are picking third because of their trade with the Texans who were horrible. The rest of the teams in the top 10 landed there because they were bad.

Miami has a lot of options but their best option would be take a deal, gain more draft picks, and continue to build. There is too much talent this year available to view one guy as the can’t-miss prospect that they have to have.
