Miami Dolphins Chris Grier should answer every call from the Broncos

The Miami Dolphins may be feeling comfortable at the sixth spot in the draft but if I am Chris Grier, my phone line to the Denver Broncos is open.

Denver picks in the 9th spot this year and frankly, I’m not opposed to moving that far back and adding what would likely be at least one more first-round draft pick and more. The Broncos reportedly want a quarterback and there is no guarantee they will get one at number nine.

We have heard that Atlanta is fielding calls for the 4th overall spot and if they do trade that pick, Miami won’t likely have a chance to drop down in a trade. We have looked at that before. If Atlanta wants too much for four and gets stuck using that pick, Miami needs to be open to moving down.

Atlanta, presumably, would draft Kyle Pitts. It is widely speculated that the Bengals would draft either Penei Sewell or more likely Ja’Marr Chase. If both Pitts and Chase are off the board at six, Grier has to be ready to get out that draft spot.

The Lions at seven could go wide-receiver or offensive tackle and the Carolina Panthers could go offensive tackle or focus on the defense and draft corner as some have speculated. What does that leave for the Dolphins?

If the selections after three go Pitts, Chase, QB, Sewell, Jaycee Horn, Miami gets their pick of DeVonta Smith or Jaylen Waddle. Not a bad decision to have to make. If it goes Pitts, Sewell, QB, Chase, OT, Miami still gets a top receiver.

Even if the draft doesn’t shake up like this and it goes Pitts, Sewell, QB, Chase, Smith, Waddle, Miami can still draft Rashawn Slater to play RT. Even in that worst-case scenario, Miami still wins.

Of course, all of this is predicated on what happens at 4. If a team trades up and four QBs go in the first four picks, Miami would be smart to stay put and take Chase or Pitts. Yet, even in that scenario, provided Denver doesn’t trade with Atlanta, Miami could still look at moving down. QB, Chase, QB, Pitts, Smith, Miami gets Waddle.

The likelihood of anything like this happening isn’t great but Miami should remain open to the fact that the top non-QBs in this draft are pretty closely measured together and there are plenty to get the Dolphins from 6 to 9 and land one.
