How the Miami Dolphins could get Ja’Marr Chase at pick number 9
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins are picking sixth but if the cards fall right and the heavens align, they could drop back and still land Ja’Marr Chase.
The thought may sound crazy at first but in reality, it isn’t as far-fetched as one may think. Consider what might happen in this year’s draft and then remember that the Dolphins Chris Grier is open to just about anything.
Miami moved from three overall to 12 and then back to six. For all intent and purpose, the Dolphins added a 2023 first-round pick to drop back three spots. Yet, can they still get their guy at nine? If Chase is indeed the guy they hope will fall?
First, Chase has to get by the Bengals at five and this is where we pick up the phone with the Denver Broncos. Three things could happen at four. The Falcons could trade the pick, draft Kyle Pitts, or draft a quarterback. In either of the latter cases, the Dolphins can make a move.
Assuming that the first round starts with Trevor Lawerence, Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, or Justin Fields, the Falcons could be sitting on the perfect spot for trade. We have discussed this before. If the Broncos want to move up, Miami can’t stop them but we know the Bengals are not going to trade out of five so we wait on Atlanta.
If the Falcons draft Pitts, Miami is fine. If they draft a QB, Miami is in a great position to trade with Denver. Denver is rumored to be high on Trey Lance and they won’t be the only teams trying to move up. Miami should hope that the Falcons take a quarterback or trade back with Chicago or Washington who sit at 19 and 20. The Dolphins could then trade with Denver.

If the 4th spot is a QB, then Miami can wait and see what the Bengals do and make the deal. Detroit at 7 could draft a player like Pitts but they are not likely in play for Chase and the Panthers are more likely going to go with a secondary player like Jaycee Horn. That puts Miami on the clock again, and Ja’Marr Chase in their laps.
Worst case scenario is that Atlanta takes Pitts and the Bengals draft Chase but even then, Miami should still move to nine because again, the Lions and Bengals are not going to go back to back at WR. Miami would likely have their pick of DeVonta Smith or Jaylen Waddle.
Now if the Lions and Panthers both go WR taking Smith and Waddle and Chase was already gone, the Dolphins now have their pick of Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater plus whatever compensation they get from the Broncos.
If the Broncos are calling when Miami is on the clock at six I’m taking that call. Unless I am 100% all-in on Pitts and he is available.
