Wide receiver unit is the key to the Miami Dolphins 2021 draft
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins 2021 draft plans could be predicated on what they think of their current group of wide receivers and the key to the draft itself.
If the Dolphins draft a receiver with the 6th overall pick, you can expect the Dolphins to make moves throughout the three-day draft moving on from players on their roster. If they don’t draft a receiver at six or at 18, moving rostered players may not be a priority.
The Dolphins have five picks in the first three rounds with four coming in the first two. They have one day three pick in round four and then do not pick again until round 7 where they have two selections.
What they do not have are selections in rounds 5 and 6. This is where that receiver comes into play at 6 overall.
The Dolphins currently have 11 receivers on their roster and if they draft another one, regardless of whether that is a Ja’Marr Chase type or Kyle Pitts, they will need to trim their rostered players.

These are not just scrubs on their roster. Miami has DeVante Parker, Will Fuller, Jakeem Grant, Preston Williams, Albert Wilson, Allen Hurns, and Robert Foster. They also have Lynn Bowden, Jr., Mack Hollins, and Kirk Merritt.
Of all these receivers, and potentially another one on day one of the draft, Miami will keep at most six to start the season. That means, six receivers will be gone come the start of the season but honestly, if the Dolphins draft a receiver in round one or even at the top of round two, Miami is going to be working out trade deals for players like Grant, Hurns, and Wilson, at a minimum.
These are the players that could get the Dolphins extra draft picks in rounds five or six and I think that is when we see the Dolphins start selling their receiver overstock. These trades could be straight up for other players at other positions or for draft picks, maybe future ones. Either way, it is hard to see the Dolphins leaving the draft with all of these guys still on the roster.
