Opinion: A wild trade idea for the Miami Dolphins during the draft
The Miami Dolphins have been involved in two trades so far and there may be more when the draft starts but this one could be something to consider.
Let me start by stating this is just my own crazy idea, and mine alone. It came to me hearing Jerry Jones reiterate how badly he wants to move up to get tight end Kyle Pitts.
“We can dream of visions and sugar plums around here.” is what Jones said to Pitts in a virtual interview on Wednesday.
Is Jerry right this time? He has a history of wanting his team to seek out and draft the hottest name in the draft. He did this over quarterback Johnny Manziel most notably.
Jerry had to be talked out of selecting Manziel. Is anyone in his ear now? The Cowboys are said to already be good on offense and it is the defense that needs help. This last season that defense gave up the most points in their franchises’ history, and tied for second with points allowed.
Those that might be in Jerry’s ear are probably telling him to draft cornerback Patrick Surtain II at ten. This is where the script gets flipped. This crazy trade would involve that same first-round pick from the Cowboys used to get Xavien Howard. The Dolphins would then step in and do what the Cowboys might do, selecting Surtain II at ten.
I’m no draft geek, but I am fairly certain that Surtain II would be there at ten. If not, then Jaycee Horn would be a second option.

In the long run, this wouldn’t help Miami Dolphins efforts to land Pitts that much, but it would help the odds. What needs to happen for that is a team to move to four wanting a QB. Even better, is more than one team wanting to do so and creating a bidding war in the Falcons’ favor.
One other factor is the position of the team moving up to four, as the Falcons probably wouldn’t want to move too far and miss out on better prospects. The Broncos are the team most noted at nine, the two teams ahead of them at eight and seven are the Panthers and Lions. The Panthers just got Sam Darnold making that unlikely, but the Lions with Jared Goff just might from the seventh spot.
The spot to move to would most likely be at four with the Falcons, but a wildcard could be the Bengals at five. That one less draft spot to move could be more advantageous for both teams involved.
Something else advantageous is if the Niners actually select quarterback Mac Jones. This would leave move favorable QB’s that other teams might be willing to offer up enough to climb the board.
One other wildcard would be a team farther down like the Patriots moving up for a QB, but the Pats fifteenth pick wouldn’t be as tempting to help head off the pass.
The closer we get to the draft, the more grasping at straws scenarios like this one we should see, along with even more Kyle Pitts mania.
