With all the talk of the Miami Dolphins potentially adding tight end Kyle Pitts, it only makes sense to look at the team’s current tight ends.

If Miami does indeed draft Kyle Pitts in this week’s draft, they will need to make changes to their current roster and that means someone isn’t playing for the Dolphins this year.

The main man in Miami is clearly Mike Gesicki but is he the team’s long-term answer? We would love to think so but he will be a free agent after this season and will be looking to make a lot of money on his next deal. This is one reason that many believe the Dolphins’ interest in Pitts is real. Replacing Gesicki now avoids a problem next year.

That being said, the Dolphins like Gesicki and if they give him a new deal, he and Pitts would make one heck of a combination. In fact, the two of them could form an elite duo.

Still, the roster would have to be trimmed and that would likely mean that Chris Myarick and Durham Smythe would both be cut or traded. Smythe will be a free agent as well. Releasing Smythe would save the Dolphins just over $2 million in cap room. Myarick would save about $700k.

The Dolphins added Cethan Carter this off-season and he is signed through 2023. Miami also signed Adam Shaheen to a contract extension through the 2022 season. While Shaheen’s contract isn’t something Miami couldn’t get out of, it is unlikely that they would release him to make room for Pitts.

If the Dolphins go Pitts I would expect either a move with Gesicki or both Smythe and Myarick getting cut. The Dolphins would then have four tight ends on the roster if Gesicki remains and I think he should. Tight end is a tough position to learn and having Gesicki on an extension with the rookie Pitts would be a one-two punch that Miami hasn’t had in a long time.
