This year the Miami Dolphins are expected to add a top wide receiver talent in the draft but to do so, they will need to make some moves.

Miami is loaded at wide receiver but the problem is they are loaded with prospects with “potential” and some veterans that need to be replaced. With salary cap a small issue, I expect big changes during and after the draft.

Miami has 11 players in the wide receiver room right now and obviously, a drafted player will make it a dozen. Of those 12, six might remain when the team finalizes its roster in September. We have talked about this previously.

Will Fuller was the Dolphins’ big surprise addition after the first week of free agency. He joins veteran Robert Foster who was also added this year. Miami will get back Preston Williams from injury, as well as Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson who opted out last year.

Jakeem Grant is a popular player that is discussed when the subject of releasing players comes up. Grant is a great return man but his value in the passing game isn’t consistent enough. Could he be replaced in the return game by Lynn Bowden, Jr. or Malcolm Perry? Possibly and I think the Dolphins will look at who could replace him should Grant’s contract be terminated.

Looking at the WR unit, however, I have to ask myself if the position is really as important to the Dolphins as it is to their fans. Of all the positions, WR is one of the deeper in potential talent. If Preston Williams can stay healthy he is an outside threat, Parker is inconsistent year to year but has a lot of upside when he is healthy.

Miami won 10 games last year without Hurns and Wilson and prior to his injury, Wilson was an incredibly fast receiver. So could Miami be throwing smoke about “needing” a wide receiver?

If the Dolphins don’t draft a receiver, it would not be completely a shock but if they do, Miami has to try to offload a couple of the current roster the best they can. While I believe Miami will indeed add a receiver, I think the roster is going to get a facelift come next week.
