What are the Miami Dolphins going to do with pick 18?
By Marco Moor
We all have an idea of what the Miami Dolphins want to do with pick number 6. But, what are the Miami Dolphins going to do with pick 18?
The Dolphins have some needs that they might like to address in the draft like the defensive line, running back, and linebacker.
If you’ve read my article regarding pick number six. You know that I like to assess how good scouts and draftniks are at getting draft picks right no matter how right they think they are and that some positions are easier to pick than others. We know the players being mocked to the Dolphins at pick three, but what about pick 18?
Virtually every mock draft has the Dolphins picking some type of edge-rushing linebacker or defensive end at 18. There’s one big problem with that. The Dolphins (to be nice) have not been particularly good at drafting this particular position. Would Dion Jordan and/or Charles Harris please stand up?
Look the Dolphins aren’t the only team having difficulty drafting certain positions. It’s a league-wide problem. We all know, drafting is not an exact science and there are times that you just have to keep drafting until you get it right. See Jaguars and quarterback!
In historical context, edge rushers are a 50/50 prospect of good vs bust. Remember when Jadeveon Clowny was picked number one and was supposed to be a sure-fire Hall of Famer. How’d that work out?
You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again. I am always a proponent of trading back for more high-round draft picks in the future because based on historical facts, you’ll probably have to draft certain positions more than once.

- Tua Tagovailoa practicing with teammates is everything a leader does
- 4 offensive tackles Miami Dolphins could draft at 51
- Miami Dolphins don’t need CB help but these 5 could be available at 51
- 4 players that could replace Wilkins if Miami Dolphins don’t re-sign him
- Miami Dolphins have a starting point with Wilkins after Simmons deal
I hear you. You’re telling me right now that I am giving up on some sure-fire Hall of Famer and/or I’m an idiot. Well, I’m telling you; You’d better be sure because chances are someone better is going to be drafted later in the draft!
I’m not against moving up, staying put, or targeting a certain individual. We just have to be realistic about their chances of success.
Personally, I would like to see pick 18 be used on an edge rusher or linebacker because I think that the draft lines up nicely in terms of talent and value for these positions at around 18. There are a number of names being bantered around that one can easily find on multiple mock drafts.
And for the most part, I trust the Dolphins brass to make the right decision.
I just hope that next year my article doesn’t say would Dion Jordan, Charles Harris and/or 2021 pick18 please stand up!
