The Miami Dolphins started another week of off-season work today and they brought in Melvin Ingram to work out for the coaches.

At 32 years old, Melvin Ingram is not the type of player that the Miami Dolphins would be targeting, normally, but Ingram is special in a lot of ways. Yes, his production is not what it used to be but in Miami, he doesn’t need to be the star.

Ingram was drafted 18th overall in the 2012 draft and has spent his entire career with the Chargers. Last year, Ingram was paid $14 million and hit free agency this off-season for the first time in his career.

Teams were not quick to get Ingram into a new deal. His production in 2020 was not what he has produced previously although, he made the Pro Bowl after 2017, 2018, and 2019 seasons. Last year he appeared in only seven games and recorded only 5 tackles.

Ingram has been on our own radar recently. He was one of four free agents we listed as potentially helping the Dolphins.

The Dolphins could be looking at the leadership and his team-first mentality as a veteran. The Dolphins have good upfront defensive players but they lack depth on the edge and Ingram could be a spot player against the pass. He has 108 total QB hits in his career and 49 sacks.

Ingram would be a good mentor for Jaelan Phillips, the Dolphins’ 18th overall pick in this year’s draft. Nothing has been announced yet and while some fans think this is a very good value signing, if in fact, the Dolphins do sign him we would need to see the contract details.

It should also be noted that the Dolphins have brought veterans in before. Most recently Malik Hooker visited and left without a deal. This could simply be a meet and greet ahead of training camp should the Dolphins need to look for help.
