Miami Dolphins showed interest in Ingram but why not Cameron Wake?
Free-agent DE Melvin Ingram visited the Miami Dolphins a few weeks back. After about a week later when things started to settle down a bit, Cam Wake came to mind, and if any interest for him might take place. There are fans that would like Cam to play one more season so he can retire with the team.
On Chargers media sites you will see Cam Wake as a replacement for losing Melvin Ingram if the two sides can’t negotiate a contract. On the surface, these two players look interchangeable. However, there are some differences I will be going over.
The type of player and the stature of the two are close. The popularity of the two is also probably close, with both drawing a lot of fanfare during their better seasons played. So it is easy to see the two as similar players. Yet there have been no outward signs that the Dolphins might be looking at Cam.
Cam is 39 years old, Melvin is 32, Cam has played 11 seasons, Melvin played 9 seasons. Overall it sure looks like Cam has better stats, but to be fair to Melvin, there are seasons where he didn’t play and or start as many games as Cam.
I am trying not to go full stat geek here, but sometimes it’s hard for me, so strap in. Here are some similarities between the two players. Both have the same amount of seasons with tackles for losses with 4 each. Cam had the highest amount with 21 TFL to Melvin with 17.
One other similarity I found in the stats is both players starting and playing in every game for a full season, with 4 each. Melvin had his seasons in order, whereas Cam had those seasons spaced out.

A few other notes of interest: Melvin didn’t have any interceptions until his last three seasons where he had one for each of those seasons. Cam got to his one hundredth sack milestone last season. I’m sure there are many others like myself, who wanted to see that milestone mark for sacks made while he played for the Miami Dolphins.
One more stat breakdown: sacks, 100.5 for Cam, 49 for Melvin. Double-digit sack seasons: Cam has five, Melvin has two. I will reiterate that there are four seasons where Melvin started only half the games played twice and only started one and the other season only two games.
If getting an edge rush specialist is the move the Miami Dolphins make to cap off the defense. These types of players will be used on just the right occasions on account of their ages. If I remember correctly Cam had already filled this role the last he played here.
Is this a move that should be made? What it be the cherry on top that would sew up the defense?
