The talent at wide receiver is deep and promising and some of that is because of Preston Williams but this may be his last chance with the Miami Dolphins.

Williams was impressive in his rookie training camp, so much so that he not only earned a roster spot, he started on the outside for seven games. After 32 receptions and 428 yards and three touchdowns, Williams was placed on injured reserve.

It was a blow to the Dolphins offense and a blow to a young kid trying to make an impact as a rookie. Undrafted out of Colorado State, Williams became an instant fan favorite. When he returned in 2020, Miami fans expected him to return down the path of his rookie season but in seven games, he only managed 18 receptions for 288 yards before again landing on the injured reserve list but not before hauling in four touchdown passes.

Williams is impressive when he is on the field and you can see there is so much potential waiting to break out. This is a kid who could easily lead the team in receptions and yards. He has averaged 13.4 and 16.0 yards per catch in his two seasons.

So why is Preston Williams facing a critical off-season and training camp in 2021? There is only one reason, his health. If Williams can’t stay healthy, the Dolphins can’t rely on him come Sunday’s. So far, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Now, with the Dolphins deep at receiver, the team will have to make a decision on whether or not Williams is someone they can bank on.

Training camp is going to be interesting. If he can stay healthy, he will have a roster spot but even nagging injuries could derail him again and force the Dolphins to put him back on IR with a designation to return.

Right now, Williams is healthy and there shouldn’t be any concerns once camp arrives. He is a great guy who is well-liked and respected by the media, his teammates, and the fans but again, as redundant as it sounds, he has to be on the football field. If he ends up on IR this year and misses most of the season, I would be surprised if he stayed in the Dolphins’ plans beyond 2021.
