Miami Dolphins: Way-too-early 2022 seven-round mock draft
By Jeremy Klump
Round 5: Jermaine Johnson, EDGE, FSU
Miami double-dipped on receiver, and they double dip on edge defenders as well. This time they take Florida State edge defender Jermaine Johnson in the fifth round. Johnson will be an interesting evaluation, as he was the No. 1 JUCO player in the country, according to 247 Sports.
Johnson went to Georgia, and it did not work out there, and now he is at Florida State. The kid is extremely talented, but there will be more questions than answers regarding his draft stock. If he can have a big year at FSU, he will shoot up draft boards, but he is likely a Day 3 pick at this point.
Round 6 (via NE): Steven Gilmore, CB, Marshall
Dolphins fans should love this pick, Steven Gilmore, cornerback, Marshall. Not Stephon Gilmore. Steven. Weirdly close names, huh? Well, guess what, Steven is Stephon’s younger brother! This would be a really cool story to see Gilmore go to the Patriots’ rival team, but the kid is solid too.
Playing at Marshall will make it harder to showcase his skills, but he can play in the NFL. Gilmore likely won’t be an impact starter in the NFL, but he has the chance to be a starter in the NFL.
Round 7 (via BAL, via NE, via HOU): Trey Dean III, DB, Florida
You know I had to have one Florida Gators player on this mock draft, but at least I waited until the seventh round for it. Florida safety Trey Dean III is a Brian Flores defensive back. He can play anywhere you ask him, but he is best suited at safety. Dean has not played consistent football as a Gator. In his defense, a big part of that is moving around the secondary all the time. However, Dean should thrive at safety all season and would be a great depth player and special teamer for the Dolphins.
