Miami Dolphins Kicking Tires On Old Receivers

The Miami Dolphins apparently are not done making changes to their roster this off season before heading into the draft.  With the draft less than a month away, it is not surprising to see the Dolphins chasing after some veteran receivers, looking to add depth and experience to what is a relatively young group of pass catchers.

The team reportedly offered Michael Crabtree 3 million for a year, a deal that Crabtree found beneath him.  Just recently, the team hosted Greg Jennings, who the team considered taking over Mike Wallace just a few off seasons ago.  Instead, the team invested in Mike Wallace’s speed, and now, Wallace is playing for Jennings’ former team in Minnesota.

The team has also returned to a former player, and hosted former Dolphin, Patriot and Bronco Wes Welker.  Welker began his career in South Beach before becoming a star with Tom Brady in New England.  The do-it-all wide receiver has struggled as of late in his career, plagued by a seemingly never ending string of concussions and injuries.

  • I both like and dislike what Miami is trying to do.  Part of me knows that bringing in a veteran to mentor the young Miami receiving corps can only help the team, but part of me dislikes the veteran money these players will want.  Neither Welker nor Jennings will become a Dolphin for anything less than 3 million a year (at least), and I would rather save that money to put elsewhere.  But, if Miami can bring in one of these veterans and get even one good season out of them, it would be a worthy investment. That being said, expect Miami to add a young receiver via the draft.
