Miami Dolphins camp day 2 highlights

Two days into camp and the Miami Dolphins are starting to show a consistency they haven’t normally shown this early in training camp. The offense seems to be playing well and the defense isn’t doing bad either. There is a long way to go but the good news is that we are not waiting until week two to see improvements on offense.

Today’s practice started at 8:00 am and so far the Dolphins starting offense is looking pretty in sync. That’s important for a unit that needs to start the season quickly. Here are some day two highlights from day two of training camp.

Jordan Cameron is expected to make a statement on the team this year but after day one was relatively quiet. That’s not a huge deal given the timeframe of practices and camp. Today he looked like the Dolphins were rolling in some of what they expect to find in him this season. It was a good day for Cameron according to multiple camp witnesses.

Jamil Douglas is going to be a key piece of the offensive line so it’s imperative that the team gets plenty of work out of him in camp. The guard position is a big question mark and there are not many in both the fan realm and in the media who believe that Dallas Thomas is the answer. Earlier today Mike Tannenbaum told a media member that the team is not looking actively for a new guard…ie…Evan Mathis.

This is important because the Dolphins believe that he can be an every down back for them in the future. Lamar Miller is in a contract year and while the team has had preliminary talks about a contract extension it’s not likely to get anything done soon. Ajayi was also later seen on the sidelines with a trainer having his leg worked on it was thought to be cramps.

This is not a surprise and while the Dolphins offense has looked good overall the past two days you must keep in mind that there are no sacks being recorded and no full contact. The first padded practice is tomorrow. It’s very important that this offensive line gets it together soon or the Dolphins defensive line is going to make short work of them when full contact begins.

This is not a big surprise as Francis and Mosley were expected to be part of the Dolphins defensive line rotation. Mosley at some point will challenge Earl Mitchell for more playing time.

There is a lot of questions about whether or not any of the un-drafted rookie linebackers will make the team, today it appears that Hull got his chance to get extra reps with the 2nd unit. Whether or not the Dolphins are playing a rotation with the younger guys isn’t known yet but at least one of them, for now, is getting quality looks.

As stated above the Dolphins will go full pads tomorrow for the first time this year. The Dolphins are allowed a total of 14 full contact practices as agreed upon in the CBA. Every one of those practices must count so it’s imperative that both sides of the ball take advantage of the first practice. While tomorrow will be full contact the Dolphins will likely take it a little slow considering how early it is in the camp. We will however get a good look at that offensive line.

On the camps opening day, Caleb Sturgis at one point missed two of 11 field goal attempts. Fransk was never considered to be a real competition for the kicking job but if he continues to make kicks in camp he may very well be the new kicker. Sturgis has simply been awful after his first five games as a pro.

LaMichael James was one of my final 53 man roster players even though he is on the bubble. Thus far several have reported that he has looked fresh and it’s entirely possible that he makes this team. He is still behind Damien Williams and Jay Ajayi but James also plays special teams. This is his first full off-season work in Miami so he will be someone to keep an eye on as camp continues to roll along.

The highlight of the day? The pass to Byrd was as perfect as you could get but it also exposed Will Davis who has a problem covering deep. Moore is a very solid back-up to Ryan Tannehill and has no concerns over making the roster that can’t be said about Davis who is competing for a job and playing time. The Dolphins brought in veterans Brice McClain and Zack Bowman to add depth to the roster but Davis has to make better decisions and this is not a good start for him.
