2015 NFL Draft Player Trades Could Be Interesting

facebooktwitterreddit

Prior to the signing of the last CBA, trades made during the draft were existent but not as popular. Today with a rookie salary pool in place, draft day trades are far more common.

More from Dolphins Draft

Long ago former Dallas/Miami head coach Jimmy Johnson created the draft pick compensation chart that gave a value to each draft slot. That chart is rarely if ever used anymore unless only as a small guideline. The new rookie salary cap has made trading up and down far easier for teams looking to gain more picks or to land a big draft pick at the top. Money is no longer a great concern for teams.

With that no longer being a problem we can also start seeing more player for pick movement as well. A few drafts ago the Dolphins traded wide-receiver Davone Bess to the Browns in the middle of the draft. This year could be a lot more entertaining as player involved trading could become popular over the three day event.

Who will get traded to where is only speculation and once the draft arrives teams might get a little worried if their targets are taken off the board before them. Here is a look at some of the rumored possibilities. The key here of course is rumored.

Adrian Peterson

Peterson has been re-instated by the NFL but there is no love between his camp and the Vikings. The waters that Peterson swam in dried up last season when he faced a season long suspension for child abuse. The Vikings contend they want Peterson back and they likely do but Peterson doesn’t want to go back. He feels that the team did not support him during that time and at the NFL Combine Peterson and Vice President of Operations Rob Brzezinski had a heated verbal exchange.

Peterson feels that the bridges are broken and he wants the Vikings to trade him.

Where:

The Dallas Cowboys are a hot rumored destination. There is little doubt that Jerry Jones loves Peterson. He has said as much but the Cowboys may not be able to absorb his salary, this would be a huge problem for a draft day trade. Conversely the Oakland Raiders are also viewed as a team that may want to trade for Peterson and they have the money to take on the three remaining years of his deal. Oakland has the 4th pick in the draft and Dallas has the 27th pick. Minnesota has the 11th pick in round one. That is not to say that Peterson will command a first round pick.

Phillip Rivers

The Chargers are a heavily rumored team to move to Los Angeles after the season and there are a lot of people who believe that Rivers does not want to move his family North to that city. He is currently on his last year of the contract and has publicly said he will not negotiate a new one right now.

That has led to a lot of speculation that San Diego may try and move up to get Oregon’s Marcus Mariota which could imply that San Diego would be willing to trade Rivers. For his part, Rivers has not mentioned wanting or not wanting to be traded. Speculation has still managed to make its way into draft talk.

Where:

There are a lot of destinations for Rivers’ talent should the Chargers want to make a move. The obvious would be a combination of Rivers and more for the number two overall selection in the draft where Mariota is expected by some to go. Tennessee needs a quarterback and the Nashville area is one that Rivers should have no problem moving his family to.

Cleveland is also a possibility where the Browns are desperate for a quarterback and tried to trade a first round pick (they have two) to get Sam Bradford (now an Eagle) from St. Louis. That didn’t work out for the Browns so it may be possible that Cleveland may try and make a move on draft day to land him.

Cleveland has picks 12 and 19 in this years draft.

AFC East teams Buffalo and the New York Jets are in need of a top quarterback. Both teams have made big off-season moves and both have hired new head coaches but at the center of each team is a troubling quarterback situation. Rivers may not like the icy cold winters in Buffalo or the high spectacle of New York City. It’s hard to imagine liking the chilly northeast coast of Ohio either but right now the only refusal weapon he has is the fact that he will be needing a new contract. So in that regard he has a say in where he goes, or at least whether he stays there longer than one year.

Again the problem here is getting Rivers to do a new contract in the middle of the draft or a guarantee that he will sign one.

Last year Jordan was the hot rumor to be traded to the Eagles. Those rumors continued throughout the first two days of the draft. This off-season Miami has jettisoned some high-profile high-salary players and Jordan’s name has once again been tossed around. The only landing spot being with the Eagles.

This is a trade that won’t happen but if it did I can only imagine the talk it would generate. For the record a combination of players and/or picks have been mentioned in speculation.

    Bryce Brown

The 24 year old running back faces a tough road ahead of him with the addition of LeSean McCoy in Buffalo. Unfortunately there may not be a big market for the runner. While Brown has a lot of potential and a cheap contract he won’t garner much attention until day three…late.

    Doug Martin

Young and hard running Martin has seen a decrease in production last season. The Buccaneers reportedly tried to trade ahead of the trade deadline. It’s possible to be a revisit during the 3rd day of the draft and I wouldn’t rule out interest from the Dolphins who need a compliment to Lamar Miller. Martin still has something to prove and has a lot of potential in the right situation. He may be one of those players who benefits from a change of scenery.

    Mike Glennon

The Buccaneers are set to draft Jameis Winston with the first pick. You don’t draft a QB number one overall and sit him on the bench. If the Buc’s do indeed draft Winston then Glennon may have a trade market that could see him moved on day’s two or three. The same teams mentioned above in regards to Rivers could see Glennon as a potential mid-round fix for their offense.
