Despite a lot of needs, Miami is likely to take a QB in the middle to later rounds of the draft.

More from Dolphins Draft

With the NFL Draft around the corner, everyone is making predictions. While Miami has many holes to fill, don’t be surprised they take a quarterback in the middle to later rounds.

Adam Gase was hired to fix Tannehill and has stated that he supports him. There is no Quarterback controversy in Miami and Gase will do whatever he can to support, develop, and groom Tannehill into the QB that Miami needs. But more than fixing Tannehill, Gase was hired to win. He was brought in to fix the Miami franchise. So Tannehill has one year to prove that he is Gase’s man, after that Gase can go with a QB that he chooses and not one chosen for him.

This is the last year Miami is tied to Tannehill financially. After this season all Tannehill’s guaranteed money will have been paid and Miami can move on with no penalty. This is his make or break season. After putting together four mediocre seasons in a row he hasn’t shown the consistency, leadership, and ability to finish games.

Miami isn’t interested in being mediocre. Stephen Ross isn’t interested in mediocre. The Dolphins want great to win championships and they should. This is why Gase can take a QB this year a developmental project. He can push Tannehill without creating a controversy on who the starter is.

There are plenty of quarterbacks that Miami might look at later in the draft. Connor Cook of Michigan State has fallen on draft boards lately. He is someone Miami has brought in for a workout and would be a steal in the third round if he is available. Other options could be Kevin Hogan from Stanford, Jacoby Brissett from NC State, or Christian Hackenberg from Penn State.

It would be wise of Gase to draft a QB this year. He can have a young guy sitting on the bench for a year, learning the system and getting accustomed to the NFL. It’s a low risk and high reward move and protects Gase if Tannehill doesn’t pan out.
