The Dolphins travel to Carolina this week to take on the Panthers in a Monday night showdown. Despite Carolina’s tough defense, there are opportunities for Miami’s offense to find success.

Despite the tough loss this past Sunday night, the Miami Dolphins offense had a lot of success even after trading one of their best players just a few days earlier. Penalties, and overall bad calls from the referees played an impact in the outcome, but that didn’t discount the fact that it was, arguably, the best performance all season from the offense.

This week, Miami will take on the Carolina Panthers Monday night, in what will be their third consecutive primetime game. The Dolphins have found themselves on the losing end in the previous two so here’s hoping that they can go into Carolina, and pull off the upset. Let’s take a look at which Dolphins players are worth starting in fantasy leagues as they try to get back into the win column.

Jay Cutler

Cutler had his best game as a Dolphin on Sunday, despite still dealing with some cracked ribs he suffered just two weeks prior. He completed his first 16 pass attempts, and finished 34 of 42 with three touchdowns and 311 yards passing. The fact that Cutler threw north of 40 pass attempts may be an indicator that head coach Adam Gase will elect to throw more, particularly with a pair of running backs who are very good at receiving out of the backfield.

If that is indeed the case, then Cutler’s fantasy stock will surely go up. It’s still early to tell if that’s the way Gase wants to run the offense for the rest of the season, however. Up until this point, he’s been very determined to run the ball. Cutler may be worth a shot in DFS leagues, and could be used as a flier with some of the top names on a bye, but I’m still sitting him until I see more.

Sit

Kenyan Drake

Drake played very well in his first game as the lead back. He did lose a fumble, but other than that, he was quite impressive with his career-high 15 touches. His involvement in the passing game makes him an even more intriguing option in PPR formats. The Dolphins will continue splitting touches between Drake and Damien Williams, but the 15 touches is about what we can expect from Drake on a weekly basis from here on out. The Panthers are good against running backs, but that type of volume is worth starting consideration.

Start

Damien Williams

Williams too, was impressive in Sunday’s loss. Drake looked much better on the ground, but Williams did his damage in the passing game, even catching Miami’s first touchdown of the game. His 13 touches evidences the balance we can expect between him and Drake. Williams has been Miami’s preferred pass-catching back for quite some time now, strengthening his stock primarily in PPR leagues now that Jay Ajayi is not in the fold. His 2.0 yards per carry Sunday was unimpressive, but if he’s going to get 5+ catches a game from “Mr. Check Down” Jay Cutler, he’s most certainly worth a start.

Start

Jarvis Landry

If not for his fourth touchdown reception of the season, it would have been a rather quiet night for Landry. The touchdown, however, already ties the amount he had last season, and we are only halfway through this season. The 32-yard total on the night was a season low for Landry, but he was far from a ghost in the offense since he did finish with six catches. Now that DeVante Parker has returned from injury, it slightly lowers Landry’s fantasy value, but he still remains a must start in all formats.

Start

DeVante Parker

Parker returned Sunday from a three-game absence to continue the chemistry that has been built between him and Cutler. Although Parker has just one touchdown through the five games he’s played, he has surpassed 60 yards in all the games that he has completed. The only exception was against Tennessee when he was injured on the team’s opening drive. His ability to consistently to rack up yards gives him a relatively respectable floor with the potential for a high ceiling. If the Dolphins offense is in fact going to improve, Parker will be a big reason why.

Start

Kenny Stills

As expected, Kenny Stills took a backseat Sunday with Parker’s return. Stills remains Miami’s lead deep-threat, but until Cutler starts digging the long ball, Stills will again be a touchdown dependent player in fantasy leagues. It doesn’t help now that Drake and Williams are in the fold either. Unless an injury occurs to either Landry or Parker, Stills can remain on the bench for the foreseeable future.

Sit

Julius Thomas

Thomas came out of nowhere on Sunday to not only have his best game as a Dolphin, but also his best in at least the past two seasons. Thomas’ six receptions for 84 yards and a score worked wonders for any fantasy owner who was bold enough to start him in any format. But now, can he continue that success? My initial instinct tells me that it was a bit of a fluke so I need to see more first. Carolina ranks in the Top 5 against tight ends so I’m keeping Thomas on the bench until I see more consistency.

Sit

Defense

We can all see that Miami’s defense is vastly improving, but that doesn’t make them a great fantasy option. For whatever reason, they continue to start games slow before holding opponents down. Throughout games, Miami doesn’t record a lot of sacks or turnovers, limiting their fantasy appeal. The Panthers have struggled at times this season, but they still have a ton of talent on their offense. Until Miami can create more turnovers, and possibly scores, they are an easy fade in any format.
