Early 2019 mock drafts insist Miami will be terrible

Mock draft season never ends, and there are already plenty out there for 2019. Based on where they are picking, it would seem the consensus is that the Dolphins will be terrible.

We are just a few days removed from the 2018 NFL Draft, but unless your new, you understand that draft season never ends. There are already a number of way-too-early 2019 mock drafts out there. The idea is to give you a concept of who some of the top names will be next year, and who to look out for in college football.

I, on the other hand, look at them from a different perspective. I like to see how they view teams will fair for the upcoming season. When it came to the Miami Dolphins there was an obvious similarity among all mock drafts: That the Dolphins will be very bad.

Now, I only glanced through a few such as Matt Miller‘s of Bleacher Report, Rotoworld, Sporting News, and SB Nation. I’m currently still suffering from draft nausea so I can only take so much at the moment. In every one that I looked at, however, the Dolphins were projected to pick extremely high. Almost all of them had Miami picking within the top 5, as high as #2 overall. I did see one that had them picking at #6, but none lower.

My first instinct was because the Dolphins did not draft a quarterback at any point of the draft. However, both the Jets and the Bills are picking right at the top alongside Miami so that can’t just be it. It’s a clear indicator that many believe this will be another cake walk for the Patriots to take hold of another AFC East crown, possibly in record fashion.

While I understand the philosophy that Miami may not be a playoff team in 2018 (I’m not convinced they are either), it’s a bit much to believe they’ll be so bad that they’ll be picking within the top 5. Yes, they won’t have Jarvis Landry, Ndamukong Suh, or Mike Pouncey, but it appears that people who don’t follow the Dolphins are giving those players too much credit.

More from Dolphins Draft

All very good players in their own right, they didn’t exactly help push the needle for the Dolphins as a legitimate contender. And after letting them all go, Miami didn’t exactly go into full tank mode like many predicted. Once free agency began, the Dolphins signed on some quality veterans like Albert Wilson, Danny Amendola, and Frank Gore. Expect them to add more players through free agency now that the draft is complete.

The Dolphins also added some solid talent in the draft as well. Although it may not be a great draft for Miami, it was still a very good one. The Dolphins really added to their linebacker corps in this draft, and they hit a home run with the pair of tight ends they picked up. Not to mention they landed one of the top 5 players this class had to offer.

Sure, this wasn’t viewed as the best draft class in recent history, but Miami does have more depth all-around than they did just a couple months ago. It’s possible they’re still not a playoff team. We’ll have to wait until the season begins to see if that’s possible, but to think the Dolphins will finish 4-12 or something like that is a bit naive.

The mentality seems to be that Miami didn’t take the players they would have, and rid of those they would have kept, so naturally they won’t be very good. I think many around the country will be very surprised with what they see from the Dolphins this coming season.
