Miami Dolphins NFL Supplemental Draft predictions
By Shawn Digity
The 2018 NFL Draft ended several months ago. Kickoff is still two months off. The NFL Supplemental Draft often disappoints, but this year it’s a doozy.
The NFL Supplemental Draft usually comes and goes with little fanfare or excitement. This year’s crop has some exciting prospects, though. Will the Dolphins take a chance on one of them?
It’s not very often there’s even one notable player in the Supplemental Draft. This year is different; there’s three. Keep an eye on Sam Beal, Brandon Bryant and Adonis Alexander. They will likely go off the boards between the 3rd and 6th rounds. Martayveus Carter and Bright Ugwoegbu are also eligible, but they face steep odds of being selected.
The Supplemental Draft uses different rules than the regular NFL Draft. Teams earn placements in one of three groups based on overall record and playoff appearances. The first group has all the teams with six wins or less. The second group has the teams with more than six wins that didn’t make the playoffs. The third group has all the teams that did make the playoffs.
At that point, a partial lottery system dictates the order of the groups. Teams can place bids on players they like. The team who makes the highest bid “drafts” that player. The team must forfeit the corresponding round pick in the next regular draft, though. That’s the biggest caveat. Both fans and coaches are wary to use supplemental picks knowing they might have to sacrifice it the following spring,

The three big name prospects all have something in common; they’re all defensive backs. Beal and Alexander played corner at Western Michigan and Virginia Tech, respectively. Bryant played safety at Mississippi State. They all showed flashes of pro potential.
I doubt the Dolphins will select any players this year. They have corners Xavien Howard, Tony Lippett, Cordrea Tankersley and Bobby McCain and safeties Reshad Jones, T.J. McDonald and Minkah Fitzpatrick. I don’t foresee the Dolphins taking a chance on any of the supplemental DB prospects. They might roll the dice on a late-round bid, but that won’t be enough.
It’ll be exciting to have another little micro draft on Wednesday, but I’m convinced the Fins will sit this one out and reserve all their picks for the 2019 Draft. It’s for the best, too, considering the amount of potential they already have in the DB group.
By the time it’s all said and done, I think Beal will go in the 3rd round, Bryant will go in the 4th and Alexander will go in the 5th. The spotlight is on those three. Carter and Ugwoegbu will probably go undrafted. However, I would not be surprised if a team does take a 7th-round chance on one of them. It only takes one team, after all.
