The Miami Dolphins re-build is real and as it currently sits, only 12 players on the roster today are under contract beyond the 2020 season.

Before the Miami Dolphins 2019 season begins their will be new contracts, an extension or two, a few new players from the draft, and some releases. These contracts will likely stretch out a season or two but for now, today, only 12 of the teams players are on the books beyond the 2020 season and at least two of those won’t likely see 2021.

When the 2020 off-season begins that 12 will rise considerably but there is a good chance that Reshad Jones and T.J. McDonald will not be on the roster for the 2020 season given their cap structure and situation unless of course they have a huge year in 2019. This is something we discuss deeper in an article publishing later today.

Bobby McCain is slated to make $7 million but a release would ave the team $6.4 million in cap space with only $740K on the dead money books. How well he fits in with the new defensive system will determine his 2021 future.

The other players are mostly young guys drafted last year or the year. Minkah Fitzpatrick, Mike Gesicki, Jerome Baker, Kalen Ballage, Durham Smythe, Cornell Armstrong, Jason Sanders, Luke Falk, and Sam Eguavoen who rounds out the list.

Two years ahead of any season is really pushing the boundaries of common sense. The roster and of course the 2021 roster will change long before that off-season gets here but the focus should be more on the contracts that were done under Mike Tannenbaum. Only two players, McDonald and Jones were signed solely by Tannenbaum. McCain could have been a Grier/Tannenbaum combination signing.

For what it is worth, the number stands out but isn’t something that is really surprising given that most teams don’t have a lot of players locked up two years down the road. The Patriots have 12 and the Jets have 14. In the Jets situation most of that money is guaranteed too. Buffalo has 15 players under contract for 2021.

It is just nice to see on paper those contracts being moved out and finally coming off the books. In case you are wondering, because I was, there are no players currently on today’s roster that is under contract beyond 2021. Rebuilding came at the right time.
