The more quarterbacks drafted, the better for Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins will be better served if a historical run on quarterbacks kicks off the draft later this month in Cleveland. Way better.
In the last decade of the Draft, 2017, 2011, and the 2014 drafts, had only one quarterback selected top six, and 2013 had no QB’s selected in the top 6 picks of the draft at all. The rest had two QB’s taken in the top 6, and three seasons had the first two picks as QB’s, 2012, 2015, and the 2016 seasons
With the draft just weeks away and the increased talk of a potential log jam of QB’s, it seems the rows of them taken at the top of the draft should be more than what I just found going back ten years, or at least the trend would be sooner.
We are most likely to see history tied or even broken. In the 1999 draft, the top three picks were Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, and Akili Smith. This coming draft most say will match the top three picks with QB’s taken again.
The top brass of the Jaguars has stated they will pick one at the top, The Jets just traded away their QB, The 49ers traded up to third with us, granting two future first-round picks, one of which the Miami Dolphins used to move back to the sixth spot.
Recently there are reports the Falcons at the fourth spot are open for a team to trade up with them for that spot. There are at least three QB needy teams including the Pats who already have two good tight ends via free agency, so they might not pull a stunt by picking Kyle Pitts.

Do you know who might pull the stunt described above? Jerry Jones. He is said to have caught the Kyle Pitts fever and with the Cowboys picking in the tenth spot they would probably have to move up, and the Falcons might be the place at fourth.
Not only could we see the history of the supposedly only time or maybe two, that three QB’s went in a row at the top of the draft like back in 1999, but we might also even see four taken in the top four spots. How exciting would that be? While we are on this, let’s take it one more step, the Bengals at five might see what the Falcons did and get in on the same action, making it five in a row.
Of course, the compensation the Bengals got back for a trade up to five would have to make them move off of having the pick of the litter of playmakers should all this play out. The Miami Dolphins would then have that pick of the litter. A guy can dream.
Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, and Mac Jones are the said QB’s that could create a proverbial log jam at the top of the draft.
Jones is the QB that the Pats are rumored to have an interest in. If they traded with the Bengals at five for him it would be just one spot more than the amount the Miami Dolphins traded back with the 49ers, so the compensation would have to be about the same. The 49ers are also rumored to have an interest in QB Jones with the third pick.
I guessed right the last draft with OT Austin Jackson as the first pick. In this draft I am intrigued by how many QB’s go ahead of us, so that we get the first of the playmakers on offense, assuming the Dolphins lean that way.
What helped me guess last time was the need to bolster the offensive line. If we are to go by Pro Football Focus ratings, that line hasn’t ranked much better and the addition of center Matt Skura might not even move the needle for this young line. The line could get better but to be sure, picking OT Penei Sewell at six could be the move if the top playmakers are gone.
Eagles fans thought the sixth spot lined up nicely to pick up the firsts of the playmakers (and that seems so) However I don’t want to get set on one player for our 6th pick (Pitts) it could become a letdown. With the Falcons allegedly making pick four available, and Jerry lurking for Pitts, the Pats moving up might be more welcome if QB Jones is still there.
The Bengals at five are said to be targeting OT Penei Sewell as protection for Joe Burrow who is recovering from ACL and MCL reconstructive surgery. Another possibility is WR Ja’Marr Chase his former college teammate or Pitts. Hopefully in that preference.
Something that just popped into my head is Burrow’s recovery window is tight, where the Bengals are projecting him to be healthy at the start of the season. It could be as much as three months longer. They have newly signed Brandon Allen and Ryan Finley as backups. Maybe they go QB, stranger things have happened in drafts.
My pie-in-the-sky dream outcome for the first pick would be Pitts or Smith, to help Tua Tagovailoa split some seams. It has long been said that Tua is good with slants, so build on that already, so far it’s just been Mike Gesicki.
If the pick is Pitts it would be the first TE the Miami Dolphins had ever taken in the first round. If it is Chase or maybe even Tua’s former teammate WR DeVonta Smith, that would be the highest WR ever taken.
However, this draft shakes out it is looking like history will be made in more ways than one.
