The Dolphins should sign offensive guard Matt Slauson

With the draft and rookie free agency signings, teams are beginning to part with veterans in salary cap or youth movements.  The Dolphins should be active on the waiver wire, and they should consider signing free agent offensive guard Matt Slauson.

Going into the draft, there was no question that the Dolphins needed to add quality players to the offensive line.  When Laremy Tunsil fell into the Dolphins lap at the thirteenth pick, they wisely snapped him up.  With that one pick, the Dolphins not only secured a potential starter on the offensive line but also a starting linebacker and cornerback in the trade down with the Eagles.

In subsequent rounds, the Dolphins did not select another offensive lineman.  The organization might publicly state the belief that the talent is already present on the roster and that competition alone will improve the play of the offensive line.  The statistics over the past few seasons and the performance of the line at the end of games and during the last half of last season alone demonstrate otherwise.  That is why the Dolphins should seriously consider trying out Matt Slauson.

For those unfamiliar with this player, Matt Slauson is the 30-year-old former starting offensive guard for the Chicago Bears who was cut by the team on Sunday.  Slauson was generally considered by his teammates to be the toughest player in the locker room.  Slauson was arguably the Bears’ most consistent and most or second-most reliable lineman.  Moreover, Slauson was voted the winner of the 2015 Good Guy Award by the Chicago chapter of the Professional Football Writers of America.

In other words, Slauson is just the type of player the Dolphins need to add to their offensive line group.  No one in the Dolphins’ organization should know Matt Slauson better than new Head Coach Adam Gase, who was the Bears’ offensive coordinator last season.   Adam Caplan of ESPN is currently reporting that Slauson is scheduled to visit with the Chargers and Bills.  The Dolphins should act quickly to make certain this player does not sign with another division rival but instead signs with his old offensive coordinator.
