Don Shula: 1993 SI Sportsman of the Year

1993

January 10th

The Dolphins win the divisional round by beating the San Diego Chargers 31-0.

January 17th

The Dolphins lose the AFC Championship game to the Bills 29-10 at JRS. The Dolphins committed five turnovers

January 3oth

Larry Little is elected to the Pro-Football Hall of Fame

February 11th

Mike Shula resigns to take a job with the Chicago Bears

June 4th

The last practice session at St. Thomas University is held

July 11th

The Dolphins open their training facility at Nova University

September 12th

Dan Marino passes the 40,000 yard mark in a loss to the Jets. At the time only three others had eclipsed the mark. Fran Tarkentong, Johnny Unitas, and Dan Fouts

October 10th

Dan Marino tears his Achilles tendon and Scott Mitchell comes off the bench to replace him for the season. The injury came in a game against the Cleveland Browns where Mitchell led the Dolphins to a 24-14 win

October 24th

Dan Marino misses his first game in 145 consecutive starts. In his absence Scott Mitchell starts his first game and beats the Indianapolis Colts 41-27.

October 31st

Don Shula wins game number 324 tying George Halas for the most wins by a coach. The Dolphins won the game 30-10 over Kansas City.

November 14th

The Miami Dolphins watch Scott Mitchell go down with a separated shoulder. The Dolphins rely on Doug Pederson to come off the bench against the Philadelphia Eagles. Miami wins the game 19-14 and gives Don Shula his 325th career victory. Shula is carried off the field for the 2nd time in his career. The win puts Shula as the all time winningest coach in pro-football. A record that still stands.

November 25th

Trailing the Dallas Cowboys late in the 4th quarter on a sleet covered field, Pete Stoyanovich has his 41 yard field goal attempt blocked. The FG would have put the Dolphins in the lead. Dallas defender Leon Lett tried to cover the ball but it squirted out to the goal line where the Dolphins recovered giving Stoyanovich another attempt. The Dolphins would make the field goal and win the game.

December 13th

Larry Little is enshrined in the Dolphins Ring of Honor

December 14th

Don Shula is Sports Illustrated‘s Sportman of the Year. He is the first professional coach to receive that honor.

1994

January 2nd

The Dolphins lose five games in a row. The loss to the Patriots eliminates the Dolphins from the playoffs as the Raiders would win later in the day breaking Miami’s chances at getting in.

January 24th

An agreement is reached for Wayne Huizenga to purchase the controlling interest in the Miami Dolphins from the Robbie family. The agreement also leaves open the possibility to purchase the remaining interest in Joe Robbie Stadium

March 23rd

The NFL owners approve the sale of the Dolphins to Wayne Huizenga

June 28th

Wayne Huizenga’s purchase of the Dolphins is finalized. He purchases the remaining 85% of the Dolphins and 50% of the stadium. At closing the Dolphins are now 100% owned by Huizenga as is the stadium

July 21st

Wayne Huizenga announces a contract extension for Don Shula. In addition Shula is made a vice-president and is given a small percent of ownership in the team.

September 4th

Dan Marino returns to the field throwing five touchdowns and 473 yards in a 39-35 win over the Patriots at JRS

October 2nd

Don Shula beats his son David who was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. His record improves to 5-0 against games against his children when either playing or coaching. David Shula riled Bengals fans for saying “I can’t wait for this game to get over so I can go back to being a Dolphins fan”. He was talking with his father and a coach prior to the game at mid-field. It’s the first time in any sport that father and son meet as opposing head coaches

November 27th

The Clock Play – with 22 seconds left in a big come from behind victory, Marino motions to his team that he will spike the ball and stop the clock. Marino fakes the spike and hits Mark Ingram, his 4th TD of the 2nd half to put the Dolphins ahead. The play was presumably called by back up QB Bernie Kosar.

December 7th

Don Shula suffers a torn Achilles tendon. He misses his first practice in 25 years. He returns the following day on a golf cart that he would use the remainder of the season.

December 12th

The Dolphins clinch a playoff spot with a win over Kansas City

December 25th

Dolphins beat Detroit to clinch the AFC East with a 10-6 record. The beat the Patriots in tie breaker scenarios.

December 7th

Rookie defensive lineman Tim Bowens is named NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year the AP.

December 31st

Miami beats Kansas City in round one of the playoffs on a pair of Dan Marino touchdowns, 27-17

January 9th

San Diego eliminates the Dolphins 22-21 in the AFC Divisional round of the playoffs. Miami’s Pete Stoyanovich misses a 48 yard field goal with eight seconds left that would have given the Dolphins the win.

January 18th

Assistant head coach and Oline coach John Sandusky announces his retirement from the NFL after three decades of coaching

September 3rd

The Dolphins open the season with a 52-15 drubbing of the New York Jets

October 1st

The Dolphins beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2nd head to head contest between father Don and son David. All time against his kids Shula improves his record to 7-1. His lone loss came to son Mike who coached the Chicago Bears tight ends. That loss occurred in the 1994.

October 8th

Dan Marino passes Fran Tarkenton in completions (3,686) to take over the NFL all time lead

November 12th

Dan Marino becomes the all-time passing leader in the NFL in yardage with over 47,003 yards, the previous record held by Tarkenton

November 26th

With a touchdown pass to Keith Byars, Dan Marino sets the all-time NFL TD record. The Dolphins lose the game.

December 11th

Bob Kuechenburg is enshrined in the Dolphins Honor Roll. The Dolphins beat Kansas City and Dan Marino breaks the last of Tarkenton’s passing records as he passes 6,467 passing attempts.
